Placement sessions are designed to determine rosters for the following season and are held in mid-March. There are no placement sessions for the Little Devils Learn-to-Play Hockey program or at the Midget level. Team placement for these groups is carried out by coach recommendations and subsequent Board approval.
Placement is the process of determining the best fit for players, teams and the organization to encourage player development. The format consists of two parts – skills and scrimmages. Player hockey skills - skating, passing, shooting, puck handling and competition drills - will be assessed. Scrimmages are used to evaluate hockey sense and team play. All players must attend both sessions to effectively determine team assignment.
Our philosophy is that coaches gain significant insight into returning players throughout the season. All team coaches will assess and rank players following criteria described in Player Evaluation document, which can be found on the Documents section on the SMS website.
Taken together, these results are used by the Board to determine team rosters. They will consist of players with similar abilities and development potential. Roster size will be influenced by the number of registered players to ensure ample playing time. Player position can be a factor at the Bantam age group.
Please be aware that players with comparable skills may span two teams, and those differences can be small. First versus second year players within an age group may influence roster assignment. If disagreements in roster assignment arise, re-evaluation may be requested. Requests must be received by October 1st by the Board.
